Conf. Sunday Message 3 on 7-18-10

BTW, speaking of accents, someone else thought this speaker said, "the WOOL of God", which was the ‘WILL’ of God. Well, I heard 2 others. I thought he was saying, "BOLD you up", and it was really ‘BUILD’. Then I heard you would be "FOOLED with knowledge", that was meant to be, ‘FILLED’.

His initial intent was to show 2 things:
1) Grace will produce every good work.
2) What some good works are.
Did I miss something? I never heard any of the second point.

The speaker said you don’t have to repent of your sin .... just trust Christ. According to what Paul taught, we need to REPENT unto GOD first .... then move to faith in Christ:

Acts 20:20-21 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,
21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks,
repentance toward God,
and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

‘Mid-Acts-ers’ don’t see the need for repentance because they think it was in what-they-call ‘Israel’s prophecy-program’ and earlier linked to water baptism.

John the Baptist called the physical seed of Abraham (national Israel) to repentance .... to make their Messiah, their Christ (John 1:41, 4:25) manifest to Israel (John 1;31):

Matt 3:7-9 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Peter taught repentance at Pentecost to ‘all the house of Israel’ (Acts 2:36):

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (also Acts 3:19)

Peter ALSO taught repentance unto salvation to the GENTILES in Cornelius’ house (his kinsmen and near friends in Acts 10:24), as Peter later testified:

Acts 11:18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

‘Mid-Acts-ers’ make a big deal out of Paul’s "BUT NOW" statements. Well, what about THIS ‘but now’ from Paul to the men of Athens on Mars’ Hill, who were too superstitious in all things (Acts 17:22)? God allows NO EXCEPTIONS when it comes to REPENTANCE:

Acts 17:30-31 And the times of this ignorance God winked at;
but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Did Paul MISUNDERSTAND his commission from ‘the risen, glorified Lord’ that he was given on the Damascus road (Acts 26:12-18)? No, he got it! Paul testified that Christ sent him to the Gentiles for THEM to REPENT:

Acts 26:19-20 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:
20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

Paul taught REPENTANCE to the Romans .... in the context of God’s judgment .... for the SAME reason as we read in Acts 17:30-31:

Rom 2:3-5 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

Paul showed that repentance is the prelude to salvation .... thus, it is WRONG to think you can BY-PASS repentance:

2 Cor 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

The speaker taught that God’s word will perfect and enable us. That is true. However, the speaker ignored the fact that it is ALL God’s word that is profitable to us for all these things .... NOT JUST Paul’s epistles ONLY as ‘mid-Acts-ers’ commonly teach:

2 Tim 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable
for doctrine,
for reproof,
for correction,
for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Obviously, the speaker has been looking at GREEK words to know that the same Greek word that is translated "Study" in 2 Tim 2:15 is translated "Endeavoring" in Eph 4:3. Would that information do anything to the frequent ‘mid-Acts’ teaching .... that, "The only verse in the Bible that tells us TO study the Bible also tells us HOW to study the Bible .... that is, to rightly divide it"? (FYI, the Greek word [spoudazo] is used 11 times, and translated ‘endeavour/ing’ 3 times, ‘be/do/give diligence’ 5 times, ‘be forward’ 1 time, ‘labour’ 1 time, and ‘study’ 1 time.)

I thought it was very hypocritical of the speaker to mock a particular preacher (whose name I know but won’t mention either), demonstrating his squinty eyes, and hand waving manner, with his (estimated) 40,000 number of people shown in the camera behind him, not counting the larger audience seated in front of him, along with his wife, plastic as he is, who teach the ‘word of men’ rather than the word of God .... and then .... for the speaker to scold someone using satire on a website about ‘mid-Acts’ doctrine? Seems like he can dish it out, but he can’t take it.

This is David Dowell, saying, "Think about it!"
